Multidisciplinary COIL and Virtual Exchange: Building Global Classrooms in Higher Education
Abstract
Collaborative online international learning (COIL) and virtual exchange are powerful yet underutilized approaches for fostering global perspectives, intercultural competence, and digital collaboration in higher education. Drawing on his extensiveexperience designing, delivering, and researching COIL projects, the speaker will first introduce the core features of COIL while emphasizingits growing relevance across disciplines, institutions, and national borders. Following a discussion of the benefits and challenges of launching a COIL program, the speaker will provide practical insights into online platforms, as well as examples of activities and tasks that can be adopted by educatorsin fields as diverse as business and the social sciences. By sharing lessons learned from both successes and challenges, the speaker will highlight best practices for planning and delivering COIL that are applicable to a broad cross-section of higher education contexts. During this keynote presentation, attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their teaching and administrative contexts to consider not only how COIL may be integrated into their own educational settings, but also how such virtual initiatives can yieldmeaningful research opportunities. The session will conclude with an open Q&A, allowing attendees to raise questions, share perspectives, and explore the possibilities of adopting COIL. By combining conceptual grounding, practical strategies, and reflective engagement, this keynote presentation aims to inspire attendees to expand their teaching and scholarship through COIL and virtual exchange.
